The Colonel partners with Meta to launch a Messenger experience to save Mother’s Day lunch during the lonely days of Pandemic isolation.

Background

During the scary and lonely times of the pandemic, many mothers and their loved ones were unable to connect together in person on Mother’s Day. The separation was taking a toll on many and Boomers were doing all they could to learn the ways of Zoom or Video Calling in order to connect beyond voice calls. The generation gap was clear in terms of technology use as younger generations struggled to get their distant parents up online for a meaningful call with the family. We noted that both generations were highly active on Facebook and we leveraged a new Messenger Video Calling Feature to make it seamless and easy for the family to get together on this special day. And, to make it even more flavorful, we used KFC’s Mothers Day Buck of Chicken as the table setting (KFC sells over 400,000 buckets of chicken on Mother’s Day annually).

By tapping into cultural insights of the moment and combining those with new platform capabilities at Facebook, we were able to launch an emotionally infused experience that brought mothers, families and the KFC brand together in a way that felt fun, timely and connected - in a time when many of us needed those the most.

Making it easy for families to craft a special Mother’s Day lunch invite for Mom’s who may be tech-challenged.

“Hello. Is this on? Is this working? Honey , are you there? Hello!?” Many of us experienced this dialogue when trying to set our parents up on Zoom. We knew that the experience would need to be in the hands of the more tech-savvy generation and help them create a fun and joyful invite to celebrate Mom on her day. By stringing Feed Ads together with a Messenger experience we were able to launch the invites and the experience all on the platform (and offer free delivery during a time when restaurants had their dining areas closed).
